The Meditation Singers were formed in 1947 by Ernestine Rundless in Detroit. She was the wife of E.A. Rundless from the Soul Stirrers. Originally, the group had as many as eight members, including Marie Waters and her sister, Deloreese Early. Deloreese left the group in 1953 to pursue a career in R&B and pop music, eventually becoming known for her role as Della Reese on the TV series "Touched by an Angel." Ernestine then brought in her daughter, Laura Lee, to replace her. Laura Lee also went on to have a successful career as a soul and R&B singer. Another notable member was Casietta George, who later joined the Caravan Singers. The group continued for a time with Rev. James Cleveland, who was their pianist and primary songwriter. Members of the Meditation Singers have included Ernestine Rundless (d. 2007), Laura Rundless (a/k/a Laura Lee), Rev. James Cleveland, Della Reese, Marie Waters, Verline Rodgers, Donna Hammond, Patricia Lyles, and Victoria Beasley (pianist). They recorded for several labels, including Specialty, Hob, Gospel, Checker, and Jewel.
