The Miles Davis Quintet was a group that was formed several times with different line-ups, primarily known for two significant iterations referred to as the "Great Quintets." The "First Miles Davis Quintet," or "First Great Miles Davis Quintet," existed from 1955 to 1958, featuring a core group of artists that included a trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass, and drums. This quintet expanded to a sextet in 1958 by adding an alto saxophone. The "Second Miles Davis Quintet," or "Second Great Miles Davis Quintet," was active from 1964 to 1969, maintaining a similar lineup of trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass, and drums. In addition to these two prominent quintets, there were several other formations, including the "Lost Quintet," which performed between 1968 and 1970 but did not record a studio album. Their work is documented in a set and included a trumpet, tenor and soprano saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. It is important to note that several albums performed by the described Quintets are not credited to the group PAN, but rather to an ensemble credit in those cases.
