**The Minutemen Bio** The Minutemen were a band formed in 1980 in San Pedro, California, by childhood friends Dennes "D." Boon (vocals, guitar) and Mike Watt (bass, vocals) following the break-up of their previous band. Though technically a punk rock band, they often incorporated elements of funk and jazz into their music and included classic rock covers in their records and live performances, notably songs by artists that influenced Boon and Watt. The band was known for the brevity of their songs, avoiding solos, choruses, breakdowns, and fade-outs. Boon was recognized for his trebly guitar tone and his belief in a "democratic" sound, ensuring all instruments were distinct and equally represented. Initially, Boon and Watt wanted to include Reactionaries drummer William "Bill" Stevenson, but he had joined another band after the Reactionaries' demise. Instead, they recruited local welder Frank Tonche to play drums. The Minutemen played their first show with another band, developing a close relationship with them. Tonche left after the second show, disliking the punk audiences, and George Hurley joined the band. While Boon sang the majority of the songs, all three members contributed to the songwriting. The Minutemen were prolific, releasing 4 LPs and 6 EPs in 5 years, and appearing on numerous compilations. Their most critically acclaimed release, the 1984 double LP
