The Misunderstood was a US/UK psychedelic prog band that originated in Riverside, California, in late 1963 as The Blue Notes, playing surf music. After several changes in their lineup, they adopted the name The Misunderstood in 1965. During a live performance, they caught the attention of English DJ John Ravenscroft, who became their mentor and likely encouraged their move to London in 1966. With assistance from John Peel's brother, they secured a record deal, transitioning their style from progressive blues to psychedelic, particularly in live performances. However, their time in London was troubled by drug issues affecting two members and the US army draft impacting another, leading to multiple lineup changes and ultimately the band's split in early 1967. Despite their brief existence of only two years, The Misunderstood left a lasting impression in music history alongside contemporaries.
