The Modern Lovers was a Boston-based band active from 1970 to 1974, formed by Jonathan Richman. They recorded two studio albums, which were actually demos, but these remained unreleased until 1976 and 1981. After graduating from high school in 1969, Richman moved to New York City, where he was deeply influenced by the Velvet Underground. He spent a couple of weeks on the sofa of the band's manager, Steve Sesnick, before moving into the Hotel Albert. After nine months, Richman returned home to Boston, where he quickly organized a band with childhood friend John Felice on guitar, David Robinson on drums (who later joined The Cars), and Rolfe Anderson on bass. The Modern Lovers played their first concert in September 1970, just a month after Richman's return.
