The Modern Redcaps were formed in late 1961 or early 1962 when the original "Red Caps" split into two groups. The members of the Modern Redcaps included Bert Payne, Stanley Gaines, George Tindley, Vance Wilson, Chippy Brancato, and Dave Patillo. Bert Payne, who had previously played with Louis Jordan, was the group's guitarist.
