The Modernaires were an American vocal group best known for their performances in the 1940s alongside Glenn Miller. They originated in the early 1930s as a trio in Buffalo, New York, and their first engagement was with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra. The original members, including Hal, were initially known as Don Juan-Two and Three. They later joined the Ozzie Nelson Band and became known as The Three Wizards of Ozzie. The group then had a stint with another band, where they recruited additional members to become a quartet. In 1937, they joined Glenn Miller's musical organization, where they were featured on his radio show and recorded many classic songs of the era, including a few with Jack Teagarden. Their significant breakthrough came in 1939 when Glenn Miller engaged them to record "It's Make Believe Ballroom Time," a sequel to the original "Make Believe Ballroom." Soon after, they became a part of Miller's big band, and Mrs. Hal Dickenson was added to the group, making it a quintet.
