The Modulations, originally formed as the Pimps, hail from Durham, North Carolina. The group, consisting of Nick Allen, Jr., Larry Duncan, Henry Channelle, and Hoyal Saunders, began singing together in 1970. They recorded their debut record for the Mozel label in New York before coming under the management of local entrepreneur Henry Bates, which led to a deal with Buddah Records. This partnership resulted in a string of singles and an album that gained national success. The Modulations recorded extensively with the house band of Philadelphia International Records, leading to the release of their 1975 album "It’s Rough Out Here" and several singles, including “Worth Your Weight in Gold.” However, further recordings intended for a follow-up album were never commercially released. The group's career peaked with an appearance on Don Cornelius’ popular TV show, Soul Train, in early 1976.
