The Monzas, named after the Corvair Monza Spyder, were formed in 1961 in North Carolina by Ward May, Skip Henshaw, Nelson Miller, Roger Mercer, Sharon Copeland (née Henshaw), Linda Quinlan, and Bing Greeson. Their primary objective was to perform at local high schools and private parties, marking the beginning of an extraordinary era in music. Over their ten years together, the band experienced several personnel changes. Big John Thompson joined around 1963 to contribute bass on "Hey I Know You" and remained with the group. Mickey Coombs and Johnny Andrews were added around 1963-64, followed by Rick Mitchell in 1966. Mike Griffin joined on saxophone in 1965, and Sammy Fowler came on board around 1966, with Billy Carden, Don Baker, and Nelson rejoining in 1967-68.
