The Nation of Ulysses (N.O.U.) was formed in 1988 as a quartet originally known as Ulysses, consisting of Ian Svenonius (vocals/trumpet), Stever Kroner (guitar), Steve Gamboa (bass), and James Canty (drums). Tim Green joined as a second guitarist in late 1989, leading to the band's name change to The Nation of Ulysses. N.O.U. presented themselves as a radical political party rather than a rock band, renaming their home "The Embassy" and publishing a 'zine titled "Ulysses Speaks" to share their philosophies. Their ideals included the destruction of America and "Parent Culture," radical political alignments, fictitious timelines of alleged N.O.U. terrorist activities, a call for high sugar and caffeine consumption, secession from the United States, and the notion that members would never age past 18. The seriousness of these claims has been debated, though political rhetoric remained a part of Ian Svenonius's subsequent work. Musically, N.O.U. blended punk, hardcore, soul, jazz, and noise, with a strong emphasis on presentation; they performed in matching outfits, reflecting their philosophy of dressing well.
