The New Breed was originally a folk trio inspired by the Kingston Trio, formed in 1960 and based in Sacramento, California. In 1963, they added a drummer and transitioned into a surf band called The Contenders. In the spring of 1965, they changed their name to The New Breed and soon recorded their first single, which achieved regional success. They worked on material for an album that was commissioned but ultimately not released. Over the next year and a half, they released three more singles. In 1968, the group signed with a label and changed their name again.
