The New York Dolls were a rock band based in New York City, formed in December 1971 and active until early 1975. The original lineup included Johnny Thunders (guitar), Rick Rivets (guitar), Arthur Kane (bass), Billy Murcia (drums), and David Johansen (vocals). In 1972, Sylvain Sylvain replaced Rivets, and the band began performing regularly at venues in Lower Manhattan. Despite their influence, the band struggled to gain widespread acceptance in the US outside of New York City, largely due to their appearance. Thunders and Nolan departed during a tour in Florida in early 1975, and the band continued for a few months, often billed as "The Dolls" with substitute musicians. The New York Dolls reunited from 2004 to 2011, with Johansen and Sylvain leading a changing lineup of backing musicians.
