The Nineteenth Whole was a funky jazz outfit based in Indianapolis, active in the early 1970s. The group was formed when jazz guitar legend Grant Green recruited its members as his rhythm section for live performances. Their collaboration with Green garnered significant attention, leading them to sign with producer Bob Porter on Eastbound, a label he established with Detroit's Westbound Records. The band was fronted by Billy Wooten, known for his distinctive vibes, and included guitar legend Cornell Dupree and percussionist Buddy Caldwell. In 1972, they released their only album, "Smilin'," which showcased a blend of earthy funk, soul, rock, and jazz fusion.
