The Obsessed was formed in the late 1970s by teenage friends, with members including a guitarist, a bassist, drummer Dave Flood (aka "Dave The Slave"), and guitarist/vocalist Johnny Reese in Maryland, USA. Over time, the lineup changed, with Reese leaving and vocalists Vance Bockis and guitarist Norman Lawson passing through the ranks. Eventually, as a trio consisting of Wino (now handling vocals and guitar), Laue, and Flood, the band released their debut 7", known as "Sodden Jackal". They gained a following in Maryland and Washington DC's hardcore punk scene and appeared on a "Metal Massacre" compilation. Flood was later replaced, and this lineup recorded a tape in 1985 but struggled to find a label for its release, leading to the band's disbandment. However, their tape circulated in tape-trading circles, catching the attention of Saint Vitus, whose singer had departed, prompting them to invite Wino to join. Soon after, Saint Vitus's German record label offered to release the Obsessed tape, leading Wino to form a new version of the band for a tour after recruiting a new drummer and bassist. Following the tour, Wino left Saint Vitus amid disputes regarding the band's direction and material. The Obsessed then became Wino's full-time project, resulting in the recording of "Lunar Womb" for Hellhound in 1991. Dissatisfied with the label, W
