The Paul Winter Sextet was formed while Paul Winter was a student at Northwestern University in Chicago. The group gained recognition after winning the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival at Georgetown University in May 1961. They were signed to Columbia Records by Hammond and recorded a total of five albums between 1961 and 1964. The Sextet was among the pioneers in blending Brazilian bossa nova and folk music with jazz. In 1962, they toured Latin America as cultural ambassadors for the United States State Department, performing 160 concerts across 23 countries. Notably, the Sextet was the first jazz band to perform at the White House.
