The Pipes, originally known as the Cool Notes, formed around 1953 at McClymonds High School in Oakland, California. The group consisted of members Louis Candys, Harold Foreman, Huey Roundtree, and Leevern Ball. After the departure of Irving Swanigan in 1954, they rebranded as The Pipes and began recording with Dootone Records. They released tracks such as "Be Fair" / "Let Me Give You Money" in 1956 and "You Are An Angel" / "I Love The Life I Live." Their music, influenced by the Swallows and Clyde McPhatter, enjoyed some regional success but did not reach widespread fame. By 1959, The Pipes had stopped professional singing, although they recorded a few self-funded tracks in 1958. Despite their musical career coming to an end, the members maintained their friendship, with Louis Candys becoming a minister, Leevern Ball working as an account representative for Kraft Foods, Harold Foreman serving as an aquatics instructor, and Huey Roundtree becoming the president of a mail-order record company.
