The Platters were a prominent vocal group formed in Los Angeles in 1952, becoming one of the most successful acts of the early rock and roll era. Throughout their career, they experienced several personnel changes, with the most successful lineup featuring lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor. The group achieved significant success, charting 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1967, including four number-one hits. They were among the first African-American groups to gain major chart recognition and, for a time, were the most successful vocal group in the world. Initially managed by an unnamed individual, they later came under the management of a songwriter. The Platters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as performers. The original lineup included Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter, David Lynch, Joe Jefferson, and Gaynel Hodge, while the later lineup from 1953 onward consisted of Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, Paul Robi, David Lynch, and Herb Reed.
