The Prefab Messiahs are a proto-lo-fi post-punk left-field garage pop band that emerged from the "Wormtown" (Worcester, Massachusetts) punk/arts scene in the early 1980s. Active from 1981 to 1983, they frequently played basement and club shows. Their only recorded material from that period was the 1983 cassette "Flex Your Mind," with no additional releases until a 1998 CD-R anthology that featured several songs produced by an outsider psychedelic singer-songwriter friend. At their first gig, the band distributed a playful "manifesto," inspired by '60s rock album liner notes, proclaiming their mission to revolutionize pop music and addressing the consumerist culture of the Reagan Era. The Prefab Messiahs sought refuge in Dadaism and post-WWII existentialism, using their name to critique the corporate-driven "prefab messiahs" of popular culture. Their music uniquely blended primitive post-punk, grainy psychedelia, and left-field garage pop at a time before terms like "indie" and "alternative" were widely used. The band reunited several times for special shows and festivals before officially reuniting in 2012, leading to the release of both archival and new material.
