The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a funk/alternative rock band formed in 1982 in Los Angeles, California. The band consists of current members Anthony Kiedis (lead vocals, additional guitar), Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass, trumpet, piano, backing vocals), Chad Smith (drums, percussion), and John Frusciante (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals). Kiedis and Flea have been with the band since its inception, while Smith joined in 1988 and Frusciante in 1988, with various breaks in between. The band has seen several former members, including Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, Jack Sherman, Cliff Martinez, DeWayne McKnight, D.H. Peligro, Arik Marshall, Jesse Tobias, Dave Navarro, and Josh Klinghoffer, who all contributed to the band's sound at different points in its history. The Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to be a significant presence in the music scene.
