The Rentals is a new wave-influenced project led by singer/songwriter Matt Sharp, who was formerly the bassist for the '90s power pop band Weezer. In the spring of 1994, Sharp initiated the first Rentals studio session, bringing together a lineup that included Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson, violinist Rachel Haden, vocalist/keyboardist Mia Matsumiya, and guitarist Danielle Brisebois. The group's debut album, "Return Of The Rentals," was released in 1995 and featured the minor alternative hit "Friends of P." After contributing to Weezer's acclaimed 1996 album "Pinkerton," Sharp left the band in February 1998. The Rentals released their second album, "Seven More Minutes," in 1999. Following an extended hiatus, they returned with "The Last Little Life EP" in 2007, and their third studio album, "Lost In Alphaville," was released in 2014 with an entirely new lineup. In November 2019, Sharp announced the Q36 project, which aimed to release a new Rentals single every two weeks for six months, culminating in a new LP in June 2020.
