The Residents are a US avant-garde group based in San Francisco, officially formed with the release of their album "Meet The Residents" in 1974. However, the members had collaborated since 1969 or possibly earlier. The band is renowned for its diverse range of named guest stars and collaborators, numerous concept albums, and ambitious multimedia, audiovisual, and stage projects. They maintain a highly reclusive nature, with all public relations managed by an anonymous entity, contributing to the mystery surrounding their activities, including their history since 1972 and the identities of the members. The name "The Residents" was inspired by a rejection letter received from Warner Bros. Records, which addressed them simply as "Residents" after they submitted an anonymous demo tape.
