The Rivieras were formed in 1962 in South Bend, Indiana. The original lineup consisted of Marty Fortson on vocals and rhythm guitar, Joe Pennell on lead guitar, Doug Gean on bass, Otto Nuss on organ, and Paul Dennert on drums. Initially known as The Playmates, the group changed their name to The Rivieras after discovering that another band already held the name. The new name was inspired by the Buick Riviera.
