The Roaring Lion, born on February 22, 1908, in Aroquita, British Trinidad and Tobago, was a renowned Trinidadian calypsonian known for his significant contributions to the internationalization of Calypso in the 1930s. His illustrious 65-year career began in the early 1930s, and he is best remembered for his iconic compositions, including "Ugly Woman" (1933), "Mary Ann," and "Netty, Netty," which continue to be performed today. Notably, his song "If You Wanna Be Happy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 18, 1963, and is based on "Ugly Woman." Due to his extensive knowledge of Calypso and Carnival history, he was affectionately referred to as a "walking encyclopedia" by Trinidad & Tobago media. The Roaring Lion passed away on July 11, 1999, in Mt. Lambert, Trinidad and Tobago, at the age of 91.
