The Rootsman is a musician and DJ based in Bradford, England. He began his musical career in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he taught himself to play guitar at the age of 13 in 1978 and formed his first punk band. His debut gig with his group "State Oppression" took place in 1981, supporting the Angelic Upstarts. After three concerts, he decided that being a guitarist in a band was not for him and retired from that aspect of the music business. In 1983, he moved to Bradford and quickly became immersed in the local reggae scene. He worked for over two years at the local Roots Record Shop, where he earned the nickname "Rootsman." In 1985, he began selecting on local sound systems, and the following year, he started playing on university radio and local pirate radio stations. This continued for several years until he founded his own club night, "Dub Me Crazy," at the end of 1991. He also ran a label.
