The Royal Family & The Poor (RFATP) was originally formed in 1978 by a sound effects artist and a vocalist. Their unique sound was created by dismantling a radio receiver, wiring it to a small analog synthesizer, and connecting both to an old stereo gram, allowing manipulation through moving magnets around the receiver. The band, initially a duo, later became identified primarily with one man whose complicated history reflects perseverance in the face of adversity. They gained attention after sending a tape featuring sound frequencies and rap, which led to a record deal. In 1979, RFATP expanded to include a bassist and a drummer, with Mike Keane taking over vocals, guitar, and keyboards. They performed at the Moonlight Club in London, supporting Joy Division. By 1980, Phil Hurst left to join Hollycaust and was replaced by another member. At the end of 1981 and into the following year, the Royal Family reverted back to the original duo, concluding their final gig at Plato's Ballroom, a venue they had established. Arthur then moved to Newcastle, while Mike became involved in solo projects and formed Legend Agency & the Project. In 1984, Mike Keane resurrected the group with a new lineup that included a violinist, a drummer, and other musicians on vocals and keyboards. During this time, Keane also toured the UK with another act. In 1985, RFATP departed from Factory Records, and Mike Keane launched his own label
