The Runaways were an American all-female hard rock band active from 1975 to 1979. The group, assisted by producer Kim Fowley, initially consisted of singer/guitarist Joan Jett, bassist Jackie Fox, and drummer Sandy West. Steele left the band after only a few months in 1975 and later joined The Bitch. She was replaced by a succession of bass players over the group's run, including Vicki Blue, and others. Lita Ford signed on within the first year as lead guitarist after initially auditioning for bass, while Cherie Currie joined as lead vocalist. Jackie Fox left the group in 1977 during a Japanese tour, and shortly after the band returned to the U.S., Currie left, with Jett taking over as lead vocalist. Disagreements between band members arose regarding their musical style; Jett wanted to shift towards punk rock and glam rock, while Ford, backed by West, preferred to continue with hard rock and heavy metal. This conflict led to the band's eventual breakup. The Runaways played their last concert on New Year's Eve, 1978, at the Cow Palace near San Francisco and officially disbanded in April 1979. After the original Runaways disbanded, Kim Fowley retained the rights to the name and formed a new group in 1984, which included Gayle Welch, Missy Bonilla, Denise Pryor, and Kathrine Dombrowski.
