The Salvadors were a vocal group from St. Louis, Missouri, formed in 1957 while its members were still in high school. The original lineup included five members: Gus Winfield, Robert Vincent, Leroy McGhee, Carl Stark, and another Carl. In 1960, Donald Lloyd joined, replacing Carl Stark, and the group became a foursome when the other Carl left. In 1961, Flint Lloyd, Donald's younger brother, replaced McGhee. During their time in the Nike and Wise World groups, Donald Lloyd served as the lead vocalist, Flint Lloyd was the first tenor and alternate lead, and Robert Vincent sang both baritone and bass parts. Winfield led on the track "A-E-I-O-U," while Flint Lloyd led on the other three songs from their two releases. The Salvadors recorded "Stick by Me Baby" / "I Wanna Dance" for the Wise World label in Chicago. Although the record did not receive significant airplay in Chicago, it gained some traction in St. Louis. The group ultimately disbanded a couple of years after the release of "Stick by Me Baby." While different members continued to perform in other local groups, none recorded again. However, in the 1970s, "Stick by Me Baby" became a prominent "Northern Soul" record in England, celebrated by DJs as a dance track and has since become highly collectible.
