The Saxons were a musical group formed in the summer of 1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and remained active until 1965. The band consisted of Marty Roberts (tenor sax), Ralph Paillot (tenor sax), Arthur 'Skip' Godwin (baritone sax), Tommy "Chopsley" George (guitar), John "Beanzo" Weinmunson (singer and bass), Robert Jenson (piano), and Owen Mohr (drums). Initially created for fun and to meet girls, the band dedicated many hours to rehearsals, learning around 50 songs. They played at local high school dances, wedding receptions, and private parties, including events for "The Road Rebels" car club, as well as at various cocktail lounges in New Orleans and Metairie. The Saxons achieved recognition by winning two first-place awards and one second-place award in three battle of the bands. Tommy George, known as "Chopsley," became associated with "Morgus the Magnificent," leading the band to be known as the "Morgus Goule Band" and perform in Mississippi and Louisiana.
