The Searchers originated from an earlier skiffle group called The Army Generations, formed in 1955 by guitarist John McNally with friends Ron Woodbridge, Tony West, and Joe Kennedy. Initially, they served as the backing group for singer Johnny Sandon before deciding to pursue their own path. Their first single, a cover of The Drifters' 1961 hit "Sweets For My Sweet," reached No. 1 after a recording manager was impressed by their demo and signed them. The band performed what they intended to be their last shows in 2019 but returned for farewell tours in the UK in 2023 and 2024, ultimately announcing their retirement on March 22, 2025. Throughout their history, the lineup of The Searchers changed several times. From 1957 to 1959, the members included John McNally, Big Ron, Brian Dolan, Tony West, and Joe Kennedy. Between 1960 and February 1962, the group featured John McNally, Chris Curtis, Mike Pender, Tony Jackson, and Johnny Sandon. From February 1962 to July 1964, the lineup remained the same, with John McNally, Chris Curtis, Mike Pender, and Tony Jackson. From July 1964 to April 1966, Frank Allen replaced Tony Jackson on bass. In May 1966, John Blunt took over on drums, continuing until December 1969.
