The Shangri-Las were an American girl pop group formed in New York in 1963, consisting of two sets of sisters: Mary Weiss (1948-2024), the main lead singer, and Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss (b. 1946), along with identical twins Marguerite "Marge"/"Margie" Ganser (1948-1996) and Mary Ann Ganser (1948-1970). They gained popularity between 1964 and 1966 with their teen melodramas, including the million-selling hit "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)" and the US #1 hit "Leader of The Pack." The group began their career performing at school shows and talent contests, which led to a record deal arranged by Artie Ripp. Their first recording was "Simon Says," followed by "Wishing Well b/w Hate to Say I Told You So." In April 1964, they signed with Red Bird Records, marking the start of their successful period with hits produced by Ripp and later by George "Shadow" Morton. After a series of unsuccessful releases on Mercury, the group disbanded in 1968. The Shangri-Las had subsequent reunions, the last occurring in 1989. Following this, legal action was taken against another group impersonating them, resulting in a court order to cease using the Shangri-Las name.
