The Sisters of Mercy is a rock band formed in Leeds, UK, in 1980 by singer and guitarist Andrew Eldritch. They were soon joined by drummer, the stage name for what became a long succession of drum machines. The band's dark subject matter, literary references, and cavernous reverb led the music press to dub them a "goth rock" act, though they have always rejected this description. Their debut album was not released until 1985, and the lineup that recorded it split soon afterwards. To prevent departing members from renaming themselves, Eldritch hurriedly released his own album under the band's name; the departing members formed a different group. Eldritch then rebooted the Sisters as a duo with bassist Craig Adams, and their 1987 album prominently featured synthesizers. In 1990, the Sisters returned to live performance after a five-year absence, promoting a new album recorded mainly by Eldritch and guitarist Ben Gunn. Two further singles followed before a long feud with their record company began. Although the band has continued to tour regularly with various lineups, playing a mix of old and new songs, there has been no new Sisters release since 1993.
