The Skatalites, formed in May 1964, is a legendary Jamaican ska band consisting of members Tommy McCook, Rolando Alphonso, Johnny Moore, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond, Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Jerry Haynes, and Jackie Mittoo. The group began working together in 1963, with McCook, Drummond, Moore, and Sterling being students at a prominent institution in Kingston. The band played their last show in August 1965 following Don Drummond's confinement to Bellevue Hospital for the murder of his girlfriend. This led to the formation of two studio bands, The Soul Brothers and another unnamed group. The membership of The Skatalites was fluid, centered around a collective of musicians, although Jackie Mittoo and Rolando Alphonso were consistently present. The Skatalites reformed in 1983 and remain active today, despite the passing of many original members.
