The Slits were a UK feminist punk band formed in 1976, featuring Ariane Forster (vocals), Katherine Corris (guitar), Paloma Romero (drums), and Gutsy (bass). After the departure of Kate Korus, who went on to form the Mo-dettes, and Gutsy, who left to join the Flicks, the band replaced them with new members. This lineup supported The Clash in the spring of 1977. Known for their uncompromising attitude and professed lack of technique, their music was aggressive and confrontational, particularly evident in their first two John Peel sessions, which are often regarded as their best work. Despite their talent, The Slits struggled to secure a record contract during the initial punk explosion. Their recording debut came after Palmolive was replaced by Peter Clark (Big In Japan's percussionist). They signed with Island Records and collaborated with a reggae producer on their dub-influenced album, Cut, which gained attention for its provocative album cover. With the departure of Budgie to Siouxsie And The Banshees and the arrival of Bruce Smith (Pop Group) on drums, the band also saw the inclusion of reggae musician Prince Hammer and trumpeter Don Cherry, whose stepdaughter Neneh Cherry briefly joined.
