The Smiths were an influential English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982, consisting of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. They are recognized as one of the most significant bands from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. In 2002, the NME named them the artist with the most influence on the publication, and in 2003, all four of their albums made it onto Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." The band experienced internal tensions leading to Marr's departure on July 30, 1987, and they broke up later that year, having declined several reunion offers since. Andy Rourke passed away from pancreatic cancer on May 19, 2023. The final lineup included Morrissey on lead vocals and percussion, Mike Joyce on drums, and Andy Rourke on bass. Ivor Perry joined as a guitarist in 1987. Former members included Johnny Marr, who played guitars, piano, keyboards, and harmonica, along with several others who contributed in various capacities during the band's early years. Session and touring members also included Simon Wolstencroft on drums and Guy Pratt on bass.
