The Soft Machine is an English rock and jazz band that originated in Canterbury in mid-1966, taking its name from the novel "The Soft Machine" by William S. Burroughs. The band has had multiple active periods: from 1966 to 1968, again from 1969 to 1978, and then from 1978 to 1983 as an offshoot band, followed by 1980 to 1984, and later from 1999 to 2002 under the name Soft Ware. They reformed in 2002 and continued until 2015, and have been active since then. The current lineup includes a guitarist who has been with the band since 1975 (with a break from 1978 to 2015), a saxophonist and flutist who joined in 2015, a bassist who became a member in 2022, and a drummer who joined in 2023. The band has also seen guest and substitute musicians over the years, including a drummer who substituted in 2016 and a bassist who filled in for 2022 dates before becoming a full member.
