The Soul Twins are real birth twins born on May 8, 1944, in Burlington, North Carolina, and later moved to Detroit in 1957. They began their musical journey singing in church choirs and were discovered by producer Johnny Griffith, who recognized their exceptional talent while they were performing gospel music. In April 1966, Griffith recorded them, leading to the release of their northern soul anthem “Quick Change Artist” at their first session. By 1968, Griffith shifted their musical style to a more southern approach, starting with a cover of Otis Redding’s “Mr. Pitiful.” He eventually created an environment that showcased the twins' talents with their next single, “Mr. Independent,” which he leased to Don Robey in Houston. Their final single, released under the unusual name “Gas & The Funk Factory” on Brunswick, featured “The Good Night Song,” clearly showcasing the twins' distinctive slightly lisping delivery.
