The Soulful Strings was a project led by Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans, active between 1966 and 1971. The ensemble featured several musicians from the Cadet Records house band, including Charles Stepney, Bobby Christian, Billy Wooten, Phil Upchurch, Lennie Druss, and Cleveland Eaton. Their repertoire consisted almost entirely of covers, and they developed a distinctive sound by blending a sharp, soulful rhythm section with lush string arrangements. Evans notably pushed the strings to the forefront, giving them an prominence typically reserved for bass and rhythm guitar, which contributed significantly to the success of the Soulful Strings.
