The Sound Providers are a jazz rap duo formed in 1998 in San Diego, California. Initially, the group included a third member, an MC, who left shortly before they were signed by ABB Records. The duo released a number of singles before debuting their album, recorded and produced in San Diego and Los Angeles, in 2004 on ABB Records. Following the departure of the third member, they collaborated with various guest artists for their debut album. One of the members, while primarily a DJ/producer, occasionally raps and contributed briefly on their debut. In early 2006, they released another album, which is a compilation of earlier songs made when the original MC was still part of the group. This album includes tracks that were previously available only as 12" singles, as well as radio promos and unreleased material. In 2006, The Sound Providers completed a full-length album with an emcee from Tampa, Florida, with the first single released in June of the same year. The full-length album was released on November 14, 2006. Their sound is predominantly jazz-oriented hip hop, characterized by socially conscious lyrics and new school rap beats, with samples from jazz, funk, and reggae. They cite artists as influences for their work.
