The Sound System was formed around 1968 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, by four teenagers—Barry McNeil, Faye Williams, Alan Knight, and Alan Wright—who attended Seventy First High School. The band disbanded in 1971 when Lynn Jenkins joined the army. The original members included Barry McNeil on organ, Faye Williams on guitar, Alan Knight on drums, and Alan Wright on bass. Lynn Jenkins, who was the lead vocalist and an earlier member of The Intruders, passed away on June 29, 2019. The group was managed by Barry's father, Bernie McNeil, and included additional musicians such as Jimmy Harris on trumpet, Ray Barnes on bass, and Teddy Ray on tenor saxophone. The Sound System achieved local success with their single "Serenade / Take A Look At Yourself," which was even delivered to Vietnam and played for American soldiers at a local radio station in Da Nang. They performed at various venues, including Duke University, Williams Lake, YMCA, Fort Bragg's Dragon Club, and Pope Air Force Base's Officers' Club, among others. The band frequently appeared on The Homer Briarhopper Show hosted by Clyde Moody and excelled in The Battle Of The Bands contests. In circa 1970, The Sound System recorded several songs, including covers of tracks by Blood Sweat & Tears, in a small sound studio in Fayetteville.
