The Spaniels were an R&B and doo-wop ensemble founded in 1952 in Gary, Indiana, originally known as "Pookie Hudson & The Hudsonaires." They became one of the first acts to sign with a label in 1953. After the label went bankrupt in 1966, the group disbanded but reunited in 1969. At one point, two groups using the name The Spaniels emerged simultaneously: one in Gary and another in Washington D.C., which included lead singer Pookie Hudson. The original lineup consisted of Thornton James "Pookie" Hudson (lead), Ernest Warren (first tenor), Opal Courtney (baritone), Willis C. Jackson (baritone), and Gerald Gregory (bass). Over the years, their lineup changed numerous times.
