The Specials, originally known as, were the pioneering band of the 2-Tone era in Britain during the late '70s and early '80s. Led by keyboardist Jerry Dammers, the lineup included Terry Hall (lead vocals), Neville Staple (vocals/percussion), Lynval Golding (rhythm guitar/vocals), Roddy "Radiation" Byers (lead guitar), Sir Horace Gentleman (aka Horace Panter; bass), and John Bradbury (drums). Between 1979 and 1981, they released seven singles, with two—"Too Much Too Young" and "Ghost Town"—reaching #1 on the UK charts. "Ghost Town" hit #1 on July 11, 1981, during a period of significant street violence in major UK cities, shortly before the band split. Following the breakup, Jerry Dammers and John Bradbury continued under the name The Special AKA until 1985, while Horace Panter remained involved to some extent. Roddy Byers departed but made a guest appearance on one single, and Terry Hall, Neville Staple, and Lynval Golding formed a new group.
