Mike Skinner, known by his stage name The Streets, was born on November 27, 1978, in Birmingham and currently resides in Brixton. He began experimenting with keyboards at the age of 5 and took various jobs in fast food restaurants to support his unsuccessful attempt to start a record label. As a teenager, he constructed a recording studio in his bedroom cupboard. At 19, he spent a year in Australia, bringing his sampler along for companionship. Skinner's first two albums, "Original Pirate Material" (2002) and "A Grand Don't Come For Free" (2004), were both nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. His single "Fit But You Know It" became a Top 5 hit in the summer of 2004. He has also performed live at the Reading Festival, appearing in both the dance tent and on the main stage.
