The Sugarcubes were the most prominent band to emerge from Iceland, known for their unique sense of melody. Formed on June 8, 1986, coinciding with the birth of vocalist Björk's son, the group consisted of members who had previously played in various Icelandic bands. Björk, Einar Örn Benediktsson, and Siggi Baldursson initially joined forces in 1984 to form KUKL, an artsy, post-punk band that released two albums on the independent British label Crass. KUKL later evolved into the Sugarcubes, adding Björk's then-husband Thor Eldon on guitar and Bragi Ólafsson on bass. In late 1987, the Sugarcubes signed with One Little Indian in the U.K. and Elektra Records in the U.S. Their debut album, Life's Too Good, was released in 1988 to critical acclaim and became a college radio hit in America, with the single "Birthday" gaining notable popularity. However, tensions arose between Björk and Einar Örn due to the attention Björk received. The band's second album, Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week!, was released in 1989 but received weaker reviews compared to their debut, despite Einar's increased vocal contributions.
