**Bio: The Surf Teens** The Surf Teens were a band formed by brothers Jeff and John Hammond, along with Greg Smith and Tony Johnson. At the time of their discovery, Jeff, the lead guitarist, was 16 years old, while John, the drummer, was just 13. Greg, who played rhythm guitar, was also 16, and Tony, the bassist, was 20. The band's association with a former saxophonist began when their mother reached out to him, encouraging him to check out her sons' band. He was searching for acts to release on his label and made the trip to Atascadero, located 20 miles north of San Luis Obispo, where he witnessed the band performing instrumental rock and roll music in their garage. Impressed by their youth and talent, he booked them for a performance at Pismo Beach on July 12, 1963, where they earned $25. The following night, they played at the Atascadero Lake Pavilion and received $50, and the week after, they were paid $100, comparable to other bands at the time. He instructed them to learn covers from other groups, including The Centurians, and promised that if their original songs were good enough, his Westco label would record them. They recorded a single titled "Moment of Truth" backed with "Moonshine," which was released on Westco WC-9 in limited quantities primarily for promotional purposes.
