The Sweet was formed in 1966 when drummer Michael Thomas Tucker and vocalist Brian Francis Connolly joined forces, initially playing in a band that mixed Motown, R&B, and psychedelia. They later created Sweetshop, which was eventually shortened to Sweet, adding bassist Steve Norman Priest and a guitarist. After releasing four unsuccessful singles on Fontana and EMI, the original guitarist was replaced, leading to the addition of Andrew David Scott. The band signed to RCA and collaborated with the songwriting duo Chinn and Chapman, resulting in a series of hit singles while also producing their own hard-rock tracks on the B-sides. In 1974, The Sweet recorded the album "Sweet Fanny Adams" without Chinn and Chapman, which peaked at number 27 but quickly fell off the charts. As the band shifted towards becoming more of an albums group, their hit singles began to decline. Following a move to Polydor, they released four albums, each making less impact than the last. Since 1982, various line-ups of the band have emerged, often featuring up to two of the original members. In 1992, two versions of The Sweet began touring regularly. Brian Connolly passed away in 1997 due to a muscular disorder, while Andy Scott continues to tour with his version of the band. Key members included: - Brian Connolly (5 October 1945 – 10 February 1997) - Mick Tucker (17 July 1947 – 14 February
