The Taj-Mahal Travelers were formed in 1969 by six meta-music creators and one electronic engineer. This group was known for creating stunning cosmic music that was entirely improvised. They regularly performed throughout Japan and gained recognition for events such as an all-day performance at a beach in Kanagawa. In 1971, they toured Europe, meeting various musicians along the way. The following year, they embarked on a unique journey, driving an old Volkswagen bus from Rotterdam to Pakistan while picking up santoors in Iran. After encountering a closed border between Pakistan and India, they sold the bus and flew to India, eventually reaching the Taj Mahal. Upon returning to Japan, they held a benefit concert on July 15, 1972, to help finance their return to the U.K. This concert was recorded and released as their first LP. Despite numerous performances for television and radio in Japan and Europe, their next record did not come until 1975. Recorded in August 1974, this would be their last official release, as the group began to disband later that year. After the breakup, most members stepped away from music and faded from the public eye, with one notable exception who remained active until his death in 2018. In the late 1990s, the youngest member returned from India and resumed his involvement with electronic music. The group also featured occasional guests during their performances.
