The Taj-Mahal Travellers, formed in 1969 by six meta-music creators and one electronic engineer, was a pioneering group known for creating stunning cosmic music entirely through improvisation. They frequently performed throughout Japan, gaining recognition for events like their all-day performance at a beach in Kanagawa. In 1971, they embarked on their first European tour, where they met various artists. The following year, they took a unique journey, driving an old Volkswagen bus from Rotterdam to Pakistan, collecting santoors in Iran along the way. After encountering a closed border between Pakistan and India, they sold their bus and flew to India, ultimately visiting the Taj Mahal. Upon returning to Japan, they held a benefit concert on July 15, 1972, to help fund their return to the U.K., which was recorded and released as their first LP. Despite numerous television and radio appearances, as well as performances at various concerts and festivals, their next record did not materialize until 1975. Recorded in August 1974, this would be the group's last official release, as they began to disband later that year. Most members ceased their musical pursuits and faded from the public eye, with the notable exception of one member, who remained active until his death in 2018. In the late 1990s, the youngest member returned from India and re-engaged with electronic music. The group also featured occasional guests throughout their existence.
