The The is an English musical and multimedia group led by singer-songwriter Matt Johnson, who is the only constant member. The group has no permanent line-up and has collaborated with various musicians over the years. The The began recording in 1979/1980, releasing their first single, "Controversial Subject," in 1980. Their debut album, "Soul Mining," was released in 1983 to critical acclaim and featured guest appearances from several musicians. In 1986, Johnson released "Infected," which included the successful single "Heartland" and was accompanied by a full-length video titled "Infected: The Movie." Johnson toured extensively with the film. In 1988, Johnson re-formed The The as a four-piece band, recruiting ex-guitarist, bassist, and drummer as full-time members. This line-up recorded the album "Mind Bomb," which debuted at No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart and included the hit single "The Beat(en) Generation." In 1989, a keyboard player joined the band, leading to a world tour called "The The Versus The World," which concluded with sold-out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall.
