The Three Sounds, originally formed as the "Four Sounds" in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, became a trio in 1957 when saxophonist Lonnie Walker left the group after their move to Washington, D.C. The trio gained recognition when they were discovered by Lou Donaldson upon relocating to New York City. They collaborated with Nat Adderley on Riverside Records and went on to release nine LPs with Blue Note Records between 1958 and 1962. In 1962, they transitioned to Verve, releasing two albums, before moving to Limelight and Mercury from 1962 to 1966. They eventually returned to Blue Note, albeit with different drummers. By 1973, Gene Harris embarked on a solo career with Blue Note, marking the end of The Three Sounds.
