Tony Williams formed The Tony Williams Lifetime after leaving the Miles Davis group in 1969. The original trio included guitarist John McLaughlin, who declined an offer to join Davis' group to focus on his own compositions, and Hammond organ innovator Larry Young. Jack Bruce, the former Cream bassist, joined shortly after the first album was recorded for live performances and the second album. However, McLaughlin left to pursue his own career, and Bruce departed for other projects, including his solo career. Young remained for the third album in 1971, which featured a larger ensemble. By the time of the fourth Lifetime album, the personnel had changed completely, and the musical direction shifted to something less radical. The original lineup recorded two albums and a single called "Vashkar," a McLaughlin composition that later gained huge success on his second Mahavishnu Orchestra album. Lifetime's sound was at the forefront of fusion, characterized by heavy distortion, unconventional lyrics, and erratic drumming, making it a remarkable project for many listeners.
